Food fail

Hope everyone’s week has been going well so far. It’s been rainy and miserable here in Bristol. I’ve been getting into the swing of my community placement. It’s really quiet at the moment though so most days I’m being sent home early. Today I was sent home at 12:30 instead of 17:00! I’ve only been working in the community for a week but already it’s alarming how some people live. When you knock on a client’s door you have no idea what sight or smell will greet you. Honestly, it’s shocking.

Anyway, I’m not cooking many new dishes at the moment (it’s always the case when uni and placement gets busy). There are so many great recipes out there in the blogsphere though that I can’t wait to spend more time in the kitchen. Maybe next week when I’m on holidays…

When I got home from placement today, since I had some time to play with, I decided to try out the Coconut Heaven Cupcakes from VWAV. Does anyone else find baking more relaxing than cooking dinner? I wonder if it’s anything to do with the fact that dinner is a necessity whereas whenever I’m baking it’s to make treats… Maybe I’ve got some issues lurking in my unconscious… Anyway, I have to say, these weren’t easily converted to gluten-free. They were a bit of a fail. Hence no photo. I think the full-fat coconut milk may be too dense for the gluten-free flour. They ended up being quite flat and undercooked, despite leaving them in for an extra 7 minutes and the tops being golden brown (as required by the recipe). And they tasted quite fatty. Ah well, it’s all a learning experience.

On a more positive food note, we ate out with some friends on Monday at a local pan-asian restaurant called Budokan. They have various vegan selections but hardly any gluten-free AND vegan selections. I went for the thai green curry with tofu and veg. It was delicious, but I’m sure there was fish sauce in it. Unless I’m mistaken, and there’s a vegan version that tastes similar to fish sauce? I blocked the thought out of my mind because I was too hungry. The above photo of me was taken before I’d tasted it and suspected the non-vegan ingredient… Sorry for the poor picture quality of us all; Tom was getting moody about me taking photos and the waiter took the shot so the situation wasn’t ideal 😛

Right, I guess I should use my time wisely and get on with some studying. Decision-making and wound care beckons. Hope you’re having a happy hump day xxx
